The Wellington Harbor Improvement Program, (WHIP), is delighted to announce that 8 additional boat docking slips have been installed in Wellington Harbor. The refurbished slips were installed by Crowe Docks of Belleville this week at a cost of $12,000. WHIP has raised $8000 towards the cost, from fund raising activities in 2005, a Fishing Derby, T Shirt sales, along with generous donations from Canadian National Sportsmanshows, (sponsor of the Sun Salmon Derby),Wellington Rotary, CLOSA. The balance of the costs will be paid from docking revenues and the 2006 WHIP Fishing Derby, which is supported by major fishing tackle manufactures and distributors, local businesses and particularly Scotiabank and Wellington Home Hardware as well as Canadian Tire in Picton. The docks will be handed over to the Corporation of PEC who will manage them. Four Slips will be used for seasonal rental, with residents of Wellington having the first opportunity to rent a slip for the remainder of 2006 for a fee of $600. Enquiries to Harbor Master, Chris Bowles can be made at 613-399-3649 before July 7th; after which the slips will be available to anyone on a first come basis. The other 4 slips will be used for transient visitors at a cost of $1.00 per foot per night. As the slips are floating and not permanently fixed, they can easily be relocated at a future date should further development of the Harbor area take place. Extra parking areas on the east side of Belleville St, just north of the docks are to be made available to improve parking facilities. The entrance channel from Lake Ontario was dredged this spring which should result in more visitors to the area. WHIPS objective is to continue to improve the harbor area and amenities for both residents and visitors without disturbing the natural beauty of the area.
